Ashamed to be an Indian

with 9 comments

This is the first time that I have said that. I haven’t been as ashamed during the match-fixing row as during this fiasco called the Commonwealth Games (CWG). Its shameful to see how so many crores of the tax payer’s money has been literally thrown down the drain.

What with foot-bridges collapsing, unhygienic loos, stray dogs sleeping on beds, stagnant water bodies, and incomplete buildings – this is the status when barely two weeks are left for the CWG to begin (I haven’t even gotten started on the ‘alleged’ non-payment of minimum wages to the labourers). Preparations have been going for more than a year. We were faced with blocked roads beacuse of construction going on in various placed – whether it was for the metro/ infrastructure/ stadiums but we took it in our stride saying “Its for the Games”.

Now I see it was all a sham. Kalmadi & Co. were busy filling their pockets while making empty promises in the air about this being the best Games Village ever or that it would be even better than the Beijing stadiums built for the Olympics. As my friend Johnnie has put it, “The Beijing stadiums have been hailed as examples of ultimate modern engineering in National Geographic/ Discovery; while CWG infrastructure shall be featured in the same programme as engineering disasters. but who cares – we’r on tv right?” And Mr. Bhanot says that hygiene levels are different for each person. Scotland spoke of stray dogs and faeces while England said that the toilets were being used by the labourers. One athelete (from Australia) has pulled out of the CWG citing security concerns while Australia and New Zealand have said that they cannot put up their teams in such unhygienic and unlivable conditions. I am now wondering what disasters shall happen during the CWG. I hope we don’t have to hear about any women athletes being molested (or even worse raped), or any theft or our brillaint autowalas misbehaving with the vistors. What the hell is ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’?

I had my fingers crossed all through the past year that we would pull it off. I f0ught with people who said the CWG was a disaster and the money would have been better spent on the development of the country rather than hosting the CWG. Now I wonder if they were right? This is a national shame.

Sue Me!!! I Am Selfish!!!

with 12 comments

Ever since I have decided to take a sabbatical, I have had people wondering about whether we’r starting a family and if we are, then getting upset because we haven’t told them about it. I have had random people message me, ping me on FB and call me to ask how many months along am I. How weird and how rude is that? They jumped to their own conclusions and think its rude when I get offended. What strated as a joke has snowballed into something else all together. How difficult is is to understand that I have taken some time off for myself – to sleep, eat, cook, bake, read, write, do up my house, take driving lessons, learn a new language. I know most people don’t generally take some time off right when their career starts peaking, but I did it. I was kind of freaked out at thinking I hadn’t really done anything new since I started working. I don’t have kids right now. I do nothing all day if I so choose or I maybe a whirlwind doing twenty things in one day. And no I haven’t taken time off to get pregnant either. The Hujband tells me to enjoy this time because we don’t know when I would ever get time off like this.

If that is selfish, then yes I am selfish. Sue me.

I am petty. So what?

with 14 comments

My mom’s always told me ‘Chaadar dekh ke pair pasarna”  which basically meant “Check your wallet before you spend”.

That’s one lesson I learnt well in my first few months when I moved out of home and actually handled money for the first time. I’d get x amount a month and I’d divide it in 4 to be used for the  4 weeks accordingly. After the first fiasco (where my mom bailed me out and then cut the same amount from the coming month’s money), I only had to ask for extra money once in 3rd year and then for my last couple of months in Pune. If I ever made the mistake of calling home and wailing I’m broke, I’d only get a huge lecture for the next few days so I never did that. My emergency money stash was kept with one of my close friends and vice versa so that we didn’t spend it.

I still follow that philosophy today. I know the chunk of my expenses and only after I have allocated for those, do I look at my frivolous kharchas.

Unfortunately, I fail to understand why most people don’t do that. Quite a few times have the office boys/ peons come wailing saying “kid’s school fees” or “shaadi kharcha”. Dude, if you can’t afford your kid’s school fees then find a cheaper school or budget your marriage accordingly. Just because I’m in a higher salary bracket and have no kids does not mean that I be made to take on your expenses. A sudden emergency is a different issue but why should I be made to feel guilty that someone’s kid doesn’t have shoes. If you know that you make x and have to run your entire household on that amount, then budget accordingly. Don’t come crying to me. And if you can’t afford to maintain 2 kids why have a 3rd kid and then expect the office to pitch in. It simply pisses me off. When one of the clerk/ peons get married, apart from the cash gift from office (which is not a small sum), we also give a good sum of money as cash. Why should I be asked to pay for something over and above that? If you can’t pay for your own marriage, then take out a loan or budget accordingly. That’s really not my business or my headache.

And when a few of us do say this in office, then we are taken to be petty or hard – hearted. I don’t get that. I don’t come crying to office and ask everyone to pay off my credit card bills or my house rent? In essence, if your coming to me for your  kid’s fees it is the same thing. Why don’t people understand that if I earn a certain sum, my expenses are also proportionate. Looking after your expenses is your responsibility – whether you earn 2000/- or 20,000/- or 2,00,000/-. And if I say I’l help budget their expenses, they tell me its not my business. Sorry but if your coming to me every month and think it ios your birthright to demand a handout, it is my business.

This is after all my hard earned money too and I have a say over how I spend it. Whether I choose to spend it on a watch for myself or help someone someone is my call. If it is deemed petty so be it.

Bura Na Mano Holi Hai

with 12 comments

I was headed out of my office to the car park and was discussing something intently with my colleague when suddenly we hear a PHAT!! And another PHAT!!! And realized a couple of water balloons had been aimed by the kid next door. My colleague’s light grey trousers were splattered  with coloured water. The kid immediately ran inside his house. We went and rang the door bell. Noone opened the door but his father came to the balcony and asked us what happened. So we told him that his son was throwing water balloons and it had narrowly missed us. And all he had to say was “Bura na mano holi hai. Yeh to hota hi hai. bachche to khelenge hi.” (Don’t get upset, its holi. All this happens. Kids will play). I asked him if I could slap him and get away with “Bura na mano holi hai”. He had nothing to say for that. I asked him what if his son threw a balloon on someone who is driving a car or riding a two-wheeler and caused an accident. His son isin’t a little kid anymore but is old enough to now understand this. We had to leave then because we were getting late and my friend would have to now buy a new trouser as well as she couldn’t go for a meeting in her colour splattered trousers. And we promised to send him the bill.

I have also played holi as a kid and I still play. But it is only in Delhi have I seen that people throw balloons randomly at strangers and passers-by. I fail to understand what is the fun in this. I was a pretty naughty kid myself but had the sense not to throw it at random people. The one and only time I did something like this, it landed on my dad’s friend who was in his white naval uniform. I was lucky it only had water in it and not coloured water. My parents  however, were anything but amused. I have seen kids here throw it on the delivery boys on their 2 wheelers or at drivers (including a few on a bus driver who was driving at that time) which can cause a serious accident. Don’t their parents ever think of that?

I don’t mean to be the Grinch who stole Holi but I don’t understand why the playing cannot be restricted to friends and families and not innocent passers by. But I still don’t think that Holi gives anyone the license to misbeahve.

THIS IS A POST

with 6 comments

In the past when there has been a blast, I have mourned all those who died though they were strangers to me.

However, two people who died in the German Bakery blasts were people I knew – the brother (Ankit Dhar) & sister (Anindyee Dhar) from Calcutta. I don’t say that I knew them very well, but I did know them. They stayed close to my house and I’d see them every now and then when I went home and we’d exchange a “Ki cholche?” (Wassup).

Its sad that they died an innocent death on an evening out and the cowards who did this are hiding while our authorities are busy shifting the blame. Its sad that this happened in a place which I would frequently visit when I studied in Pune. Its sad because one of my close friends who was in Pune on work visited German Bakery exactly twenty four hours before the blast. Its sad because we again have no answers. Its sad because these blasts will happen again and again innocent people will die while the authorities are busy passing the buck.

I’m cranky.I’m depressed.I’m stressed out. I’m upset.

What’s the point of working my bloody butt flat out but not getting any recognition for the same? Or what is the point of missing out on life while I am working? 20 years down the line will I be able to say that I was there for my friends or will I say that I was stuck at work? I just want to take a good long break free from all the stress and strain which is telling on me.

Hiiiiii!!!!

with 10 comments

Heyloooo!!!! Yes I know I have been away for a superlong while and many of you may ahve actually forgotten me (Me thinks I need to go knock on the proverbial dors again to say “Hi, I’m back”  :P). Btw why am I not getting snowlakes on my blog?

Well, life’s been awfully crazy and hectic.I’v been wokring my ass off and while at it bought a pair of chocolate brown shoes with sexy but suprisingly comfy heels, another brownish/ maroonish gladitaor heels and a sleeveless black sweater from Benetton.

My reporting’s been changed so now I report to a new partner w.e.f 1st December 2009. I have been snowed under (lkeeping in tune with the holiday season) with work. I had to miss a very close friend’s wedding and was almsot in tears earlier this month. We were supposed to go to Jaipur for another friend’s wedding for three days on 22nd of this month, but my boss asked me not to go because of work. And these were two wedings I was really looking forward to – one of roommate of three years from Pune finally geting married to her college sweetheart (which would have been like a mini0-reunion with friends) and the other one’s happening in some fort near Jaipur in full Rajput style.

Alas!!!! Anyway just came out of my files to say Hi to all off you and tell you about my dukhbhari katha.

See ya around soon. And Greetings of the Season!!!! Ho ho ho and all that 🙂
