Where were you when India won?

I was in front of the television yelling my lungs out, screaming and shouting, bringing the house down. There were 4 of us dancing at home full chhapri style when Dhoni hit the winning runs – and a very bemused 3 year old wondering what was wrong with the grown-ups. The dholaks and the patakas could already be heard. There was a big screen set up in the park in the colony, but the drizzle and the mosquitoes drove us indoors. We were out on the streets dancing with everyone the moment the six was hit. There were people on the roads in bikes and cars screaming “Indiaaaaa India Indiaaaaa India”. We lit a couple of sau ki ladis (firecrackers) and then celebrated with sparklers. We also gave some to the colony kids to celebrate. We went out for dinner after that to a local hangout joint, and everyone there was congratulating each other.

It was so awesome to see the outpouring and confidence we had in our team on twitter. Watching a match and tweeting simultaneously is akin to watching the match in a virtual stadium. Super fun. It brought the whole country together. The emotions were running high in the semi final against Pakistan for obvious reasons, but in the finals against Sri Lanka, it was completely cricket. The game could have gone either way, but in the end the better team did win, and that team was Indiaaaaa.

2015, 2019, 2023 and even thereafter, your always going to be asked – Where were you when India won the World Cup in 2011?
